Beyond Reporting: Marchiol's ESG Evolution to Integrated Sustainability

LogoMarchiol

Marchiol S.p.A. is an Italian company founded in 1951, with over seventy years of presence in the northeastern part of the country as a supplier and distributor of electrical materials for civil and industrial applications. The business, which was founded and is still managed as a family-owned company, is based on service, technical expertise, and a wide range of products to meet customer needs. The company’s vision is focused on supporting technological innovation in the electrical sector, emphasizing quality and proximity to the market.

The Challenge

Marchiol, a company active in the wholesale distribution of electrical materials, requested specialized support for the collection of ESG data in order to evolve from traditional methods, such as Excel files, to an advanced and systematic approach for the segmentation and collection of information required for ISO certifications.

In 2023, ahead of the renewal of the ISO 14064 certification and the upcoming publication of its first Sustainability Report, Marchiol recognized the need to adopt an application to simplify and structure the collection of data – particularly related to indirect emissions from Scope 3 – across all the company’s locations in Veneto, Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige, and Emilia-Romagna.

The Approach

Our relationship with Marchiol has evolved over the years, following regulatory changes and gradually expanding the range of activities in which we have collaborated.

In 2023, we supported Marchiol in the structured collection of environmental data for 2021 and 2022 from all the company’s Italian branches and in the precise calculation of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. We also assisted the company in conducting an initial materiality analysis based on the GRI, MSCI, and SASB standards, as well as a benchmark analysis of the main competitors in the market, complemented by stakeholder engagement to confirm relevant material topics.

In 2024, Marchiol decided to prepare its first voluntary Sustainability Report, based on the GRI framework, expanding the scope of the 2023 data reported on the ESGeo platform to include social and governance topics identified through the materiality analysis carried out the previous year. The ESGeo team also supported the company in reviewing and completing the EcoVadis questionnaire, highlighting Marchiol’s key strengths and potential areas for improvement.

Based on the results of this analysis, in 2025, we supported Marchiol in drafting new corporate policies and updating existing ones to better align them with EcoVadis best practices. Through the ESG.Academy Master, we also helped Marchiol's team develop the necessary skills to better address the increasing challenges of sustainability and ESG reporting.

Due to regulatory changes, it was ultimately decided to collect and present the 2024 ESG data in a VSME-inspired Sustainability Report, selecting the most relevant items for Marchiol and its stakeholders. The company’s reporting became even more structured, further expanding ESG data collection to include the controlled companies. This effort was reflected in Marchiol's 2024 Sustainability Report, which ESGeo supported throughout the drafting and graphic conversion phases to ensure it was easily accessible to all stakeholders.

The Impact

Thanks to our support, Marchiol has achieved significant improvements in operational efficiency and compliance with ESG standards. Data management has become more precise and centralized through the adoption of a structured system, which replaced the manual Excel-based approach. This has made data collection faster and allowed the company to respond more quickly to reporting and compliance requests. Expanding data collection to controlled companies has also provided Marchiol with a comprehensive view of its ESG performance, enabling more strategic management of sustainability initiatives.

Another important achievement was the improvement of ESG performance, particularly through the analysis of the EcoVadis scorecards. This allowed for the identification of gaps in corporate policies, which were addressed by introducing appropriate policies in areas such as the environment and privacy. The ESG.Academy Master also contributed to building a strong corporate culture in ESG, equipping Marchiol’s team with the skills needed to effectively manage various regulatory requests and strategic sustainability initiatives.

The approach adopted ultimately optimized Marchiol’s reporting, ensuring that the Sustainability Report has been compliant with GRI and VSME standards over the years and, enriched by effective graphic presentation, is clear and easily understandable for all stakeholders.
